We are now living in increasingly regulated times.  As churches we need to come to terms with a variety of requirements that governments places on us.

Christian Safeguarding Services doesn't analyse the complexities or the subtleties of the national legal position.  CSS are specialists in safeguarding, not legal experts.  We approach this theme consistently with our beliefs, and by seeking, to support and to serve and help churches to exceed the minimum legal requirements. We also exist to encourage churches to glorify God by achieving best practice minimum standards.

Legislation and Guidance

We will reference to relevant legislation and guidance that's helpful. We will be highlighting resources and legislation in helping churches to develop effective systems embracing best practice principles. It is essential that churches meet their legal duties. However, the legislation is written for legal purposes and it's sometimes difficult to translate and apply practically.  The guidance provided both nationally and locally can be regarded as the "how" of the legislation but the guidance is much more helpful.  It is important we have a good grasp of legislation and of our legal duties.

It's also important to note the difference between legal duties and national and local expectations. Many of the legal duties apply to other organisations so they don't technically apply to churches. That said, the Local Authority has the legal duty to protect children and to work with partners to keep children safe. This includes us as churches as partners . Although the legal duty does not rest on churches,  if we fail to play our part, then we are hindering the Local Authority's ability to fulfil its duties.
